CBC Gradebook App for Kenyan Teachers
DARASA's CBC gradebook records each assessment by strand and sub-strand and turns every score into a CBC performance level, from EE1 to BE2, so you never work out levels by hand. It sits in the same app as your 8-4-4 gradebook, class by class.

The CBC performance levels DARASA uses
| Level | Band | Score | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| EE1 | Exceeding Expectation | 90–100% | 8 |
| EE2 | Exceeding Expectation | 75–89% | 7 |
| ME1 | Meeting Expectation | 58–74% | 6 |
| ME2 | Meeting Expectation | 41–57% | 5 |
| AE1 | Approaching Expectation | 31–40% | 4 |
| AE2 | Approaching Expectation | 21–30% | 3 |
| BE1 | Below Expectation | 11–20% | 2 |
| BE2 | Below Expectation | 0–10% | 1 |
DARASA works out each score as a percentage of the assessment's maximum marks before choosing the level.
What else is in the gradebook
Strand-level records
Each CBC assessment is tied to a strand and sub-strand, so your records show what was assessed, not just the marks.
Mean score and mean grade
Every assessment shows the class mean score and the grade that mean earns.
Ranked learners

CBC and 8-4-4 in one gradebook
Many Kenyan schools are still running both curricula until the last 8-4-4 cohorts finish Form Four. In DARASA each class has its own curriculum, so a Grade 6 class is graded on the CBC scale while a Form 4 class is graded on the KCSE scale, from A (12 points) to E (1 point), in the same account.
Common Questions
How do I grade CBC learners?
CBC grading is based on the strands and sub-strands in KICD's curriculum designs, not a single exam mark. For each one you record how the learner is performing using the performance levels: Exceeding Expectation (EE), Meeting Expectation (ME), Approaching Expectation (AE), or Below Expectation (BE). In DARASA, mark a class as CBC and the gradebook is organised by strand and sub-strand for you.
Does DARASA support both CBC and 8-4-4?
Yes. You can mark each class as CBC or 8-4-4, from pre-primary to Form 4, and DARASA grades, plans, and reports for that class accordingly. CBC classes are graded by strand and sub-strand, and 8-4-4 classes by subject and exam score. Lesson plans and schemes of work follow the same split: CBC uses strands, sub-strands, and key inquiry questions, while 8-4-4 uses topics and sub-topics. Many schools are running both until the last 8-4-4 cohorts finish Form Four, so you can teach both in one account.
Which grades and levels does DARASA support?
DARASA has 16 levels built in: Pre-Primary 1 and 2, Grades 1 to 12 for CBC, and Forms 3 and 4 for the 8-4-4 classes still running. When you create a class you pick its level, and DARASA sets CBC or 8-4-4 for you. Official KICD strand and sub-strand data is built in for selected learning areas from Pre-Primary to Grade 5. For other levels DARASA drafts lesson plans and schemes of work with AI, which you review and adjust.
Can I export student grades from DARASA?
You can download PDFs from across DARASA: the gradebook for a class, class analytics, each class teacher tab (class list, performance, attendance, and more), schemes of work, and AI marking schemes. There is no CSV or Excel export of the gradebook at the moment.
How much does DARASA cost?
Right now, DARASA is completely free for every teacher until 1 January 2027, with full access and no card needed.
